Fairy Flowers

The language of flowers can be found as far back as the 14th century. Originally used to mask unpleasant odors, the nosegay soon became a way to convey special feelings by the message of each flower.

In Victorian days it was popular to make a tussy mussy, a small flower bouquet, to send a special message to the receiver. Each flower of the bouquet had a special meaning and sentiments could be conveyed by the selection of flowers.

I will bring you the lily that laughs,
I will twine with soft narcissus,
the myrtle, sweet crocus, white violet,
the purple hyacinth, and last,
the rose, loved of love.

by Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)
